Read This Before Shopping For Garden Shed Kits

Backyard storage sheds are a great investment; freeing up valuable space in your home or garage while keeping all your tools, equipment and supplies organized, safe and secure.  But the task of building a shed from scratch can be very daunting for most people and hiring a contractor to build one for you can be expensive.  Garden shed kits offer a practical, convenient and affordable solution to your outdoor storage needs.

Outdoor garden sheds are generally made of plastic, wood or metal.  There are pros and cons to each material. Do your homework before deciding which type of shed you want to install. Check on-line to discover the advantages and disadvantages of each before making a selection. Generally speaking, plastic sheds are lightweight, very low maintenance and are the easiest to install. But be aware that all plastics are not created equal.  For superior quality and durability look for kits that are made from High Density Polyethylene.

Many people prefer a garden shed made from wood. Wooden sheds require regular maintenance and are more complicated to assemble. Make sure you choose a kit made from wood that has been treated to be rot and insect resistant. With most wood shed kits you also have to purchase paint and shingles.

Metal sheds are strong and long lasting but tend to have problems with dents and rust.  Some manufacturers use steel that is coated with vinyl for increased durability. Metal sheds are somewhat more difficult to assemble due to the weight of the materials. Most metal shed kits don’t come with a floor so you have to install your own.

Before you choose a shed kit, determine whether or not you are going to be able to install the shed yourself. Read product reviews on-line to see what other consumers have to say about ease of installation.  Check to see if the manufacturer has a customer help line to assist with problems should they arise. Shed kits come prefabricated, pre-cut or installed. Prefabricated kits arrive with wall panels, roof and floor sections already assembled and you only have to snap or screw them together in the correct order. A pre-cut kit requires much more skill and time on your part. All of the materials are measured and precut and come with step-by-step shed plans. You have to build it yourself on-site. If installing it yourself is something you don’t think you can do, some suppliers offer professional installation.

Don’t buy a shed kit until you have checked out the local or municipal building codes and by-laws in your area. There may be regulations in place regarding how close to the property lines you can place your shed or how large your shed can be.  You may also require a building permit.  Checking this out in advance will avoid the nightmare scenario of being ordered to tear down your new shed because you are in violation of some by-law.

Garden shed kits are available in a multitude of styles and sizes and if you take the time to do some research, you will find the one that is just right for you. You will find it can provide you with much more than storage space. With a little imagination these backyard buildings can become potting sheds, art studios, home offices or even guestrooms.
