Go Green With Solar Powered Shed LightsAnyone who has ever stumbled around a dark shed, banging into things, while searching for a tool or that bag of ice melt left over from last winter, knows the value of having some type of reliable lighting system in an outdoor garden shed. Battery operated touch lights are a cheap option, but the batteries always seem to die at the most inconvenient times. Connecting a shed to the power grid can be a very expensive and complicated process, and for most people it just isn’t practical. Solar powered shed lights offer an affordable lighting solution that is energy efficient and environmentally sound. Solar powered lights are powered by the sun. The lighting system consists of a solar panel that stores the sun’s energy in rechargeable batteries, which is wired to a light fixture. The rechargeable batteries are replaceable but generally last for a couple of years.
There are two main types of solar lights available. The first is an LED (Light Emitting Diode) light fixture. With an average rated life of 100,000 hours, LED’s offer years of use before they have to be replaced. This type of light is also commonly used in security lights. The second type uses compact fluorescent lights, which are an efficient light source using about seventy five percent less power than regular light bulbs, while providing just as much light. The kits generally come with a solar panel, a mounting kit, rechargeable batteries, electrical cord and light fixture(s). You will need to mount the solar panel on the roof or a wall. Placement is important as you want to ensure that the panel is in an area that receives the maximum amount of light possible and is not in shade for part of the day. Determine where you want to place your light fixture(s) in the interior and how many feet of electrical wire you require. You then run the electrical cord from the panel into the building and attach it to your light fixture. This may necessitate drilling a small hole to accommodate the cord. A simple solar light kit, using either LED or compact fluorescent light fixtures, can be purchased for under $30 (USD). You can expect these lights to last up to four hours on a full charge. More expensive models feature larger solar panels and/or larger batteries and in some cases more than one light fixture. Some of these models can power your lights continuously. These shed lights are very versatile and can be used in any area where you need light; garage, greenhouse, trailer, boat or workshop. People are even using them in their homes and cottages to reduce their power consumption and save money on electricity. Some solar lights are portable and can be taken down from their wall mount and used much like a flashlight. Solar powered shed lights provide the most cost effective means of lighting you outdoor buildings, while allowing you to use a clean, environmentally friendly energy source. |
