Don't Start Building Without Storage Shed Plans

A well constructed, attractive, functional storage shed can increase the value of your property. Unfortunately, a poorly constructed shed can have the opposite effect. Potential buyers aren’t going to want to purchase a property only to have to go to the time and trouble of tearing down a backyard building. So, if you’re thinking of building your own outdoor storage shed, make sure you start with good storage shed plans and follow them. Good building plans have been developed by experienced designers and builders. By following a plan you can avoid potential pitfalls and save yourself time and money.

Before you even start looking at shed plans, there is some pre-planning that you need to do. First you will have to determine how large a storage shed you want to build. There are three factors to consider when making that determination; how much space you have available in your yard, what you are planning to store in your new shed and finally, are there any local by-laws or regulations that dictate either the size or placement of garden sheds.

Next you need to consider what type and style of shed you want to build. Usually if you are building a shed from scratch you will be constructing it out of either wood or metal. There are a number of different shed styles from lean-to sheds to more elaborate barn like structures and gable roofed cottages. Do a little research to determine what style of shed would best meet your needs and blend in well with your home and garden.

Now that you know what size of shed you need, what it will be made of and what style you want, you are ready to find a shed design and plan that fits the bill.  Shed plans can be found at hardware and home improvement stores, on the internet and even at your local library. There are free shed plans available but some of them may not be as complete or as well thought out as they should be. Your best bet is to purchase a digital guide on-line that will give you access to hundreds of professional designs and building plans. You can then select a few that appeal to you and download them.

When choosing shed plans, look for plans that include the following: easy to follow, step-by-step building instructions with illustrations and diagrams; a set of blueprints; a complete materials list including all hardware you will require; door and window framing details; and a list of all the tools you will need to do the job. If you are building a wooden shed you may also want to look for a plan that includes roof rafter templates, which will simplify the difficult task of cutting rafters. With a materials list in hand, you can get an estimate of the building costs from your local building supply store.

Storage shed plans can help you build a shed that will not only be the envy of all your neighbors, but will increase the value of your home should you ever decide to sell.
